BE LUNGWORM AWARE……..

Filed under: Uncategorized — Helen @ 9:35 pm

Due to the large increase in the number of Lungworm cases we are seeing, we would encourage all local dog owners to become LUNGWORM AWARE.

The lifecycle of this worm involves slugs and snails. Your dog could ingest these, or just the slime that they produce. This can be found on grass, on sticks in the park, on their toys and in puddles. Symptoms range from lethargy, bleeding disorders and respiratory signs such as wheezing and coughing. Some cases suffer severe lung damage and it can prove fatal.

However, Lungworm is easily prevented!

ADVOCATE is the only licensed product for the prevention and treatment of Lungworm. It comes in the form of an easy to use monthly spot-on, and also treats and prevents fleas, worms and fox mange.

During May and June we are offering a whopping 20% DISCOUNT ON A YEARS SUPPLY for your pet (2 x 6 packs). Ask at reception for details.

If you would like more details on lungworm, there is a wealth of information on this website:

BARNEY THE HEARING DOG RETIRES

Filed under: Uncategorized — Helen @ 10:59 am

Barney, a beautiful Golden Retriever Hearing Dog and regular client, retires from his duties this month, on his 12th birthday.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY BARNEY!

He was born in Scotland, but by 9 months old he became too big for his family home and was handed over to a rescue centre, and then to the Hearing Dogs for Deaf People charity.

Barney was trained for 2 years at this centre, and then given to his owner to help in his daily routines and provide him with a life changing level of independence and security, which otherwise would not be possible. Barney has been with his owner for over 10 years and is a regular and much loved visitor to the clinic.

The Hearing Dogs for Deaf People is celebrating 30 years this year, which marks another occasion to celebrate. It is an amazing organization that trains dogs to alert deaf people to recognise household sounds and danger signals in the home, work place and in public.  These dogs have transformed so many lives around the UK, and are in huge demand.

The breeding, training placements and lifelong care of each hearing dog costs around £45,000, which all has to be raised by donations.

If you would like to donate to the Hearing Dogs, or to read stories about the life changing affects that these dogs have on their owners, please visit:

A HUTCH IS NOT ENOUGH……

Filed under: Uncategorized — Helen @ 5:21 pm

Sadly, despite being the third most popular pets in Britain, rabbits are still one of the most neglected domestic animals.

A huge proportion of rabbits live out their days in a small hutch with little or no exercise, or are unwanted and discarded onto rescue centres that are already bursting at the seams. Most cases of cruelty and neglect towards rabbits are out of ignorance; people often don’t realise they are doing anything wrong because they haven’t done enough research into rabbit care and wellbeing before choosing to buy a pet rabbit.

We firmly believe that Rabbits Deserve Better!

Below is a link to a short video that the Rabbit Welfare Fund (http://rabbitwelfare.co.uk) have made, titled “A Hutch is not enough”

As well as being an animal welfare agency, the RWAF also offers members the support needed to give their rabbits the best lives possible and have a huge wealth of experience to share with you.

RUPERT = STAR PET OF THE MONTH

Filed under: Uncategorized — Helen @ 5:20 pm

Rupert, a very affectionate 2 year old male cat, was admitted to our Clifton Road clinic a few weeks ago as he had not eaten for 4 days and was having breathing difficulties. By taking an Xray we found he had a DIAPHRAGMATIC HERNIA. This is a tear in the diaphragm allowing the liver and intestines to enter into the chest cavity.

He underwent major surgery to replace the viscera into the abdomen, and repair the large tear in his diaphragm.

He is now recovering well at home and looking forward to a long life ahead of him. This is yet another chance in life for Rupert, considering that at 4 weeks of age he was orphaned and his owners had to hand rear him and his sister.

Thank fully his owners had Pet Insurance, as Rupert’s lifesaving treatment cost over £2000 in total

TYLER THE CAT BECOMES FAMOUS AT 23 YEARS OLD

Filed under: Uncategorized — Helen @ 4:39 pm
One of our regular visitors to the Gipsy Road clinic = Tyler the cat, who is 23 years old, is featured in today’s Financial Times in an interesting article on how our pets are living longer these days. This is mainly due to improved genetics, nutrition and huge advances in veterinary care in understanding the needs of an older pet.
